Having a hazelnut allergy often means giving up one of life's simplest pleasures: a good chocolate spread to enjoy at breakfast, as a snack or at many other moments of the day.
Fortunately, that's no longer the case. There are alternatives that don't ask you to compromise: truly delicious chocolate spreads, safe for people with allergies and made with quality ingredients. In this article we explain what to look for and what makes the solution we've developed at Vasetto different.
Why it's so hard to find a hazelnut-free chocolate spread
For decades, hazelnuts have been one of the most widely used ingredients in chocolate spreads. They're inexpensive, plentiful and work brilliantly as a natural thickener: they improve texture, add volume and lower production costs. That's why you'll find them practically everywhere, from the best-known brands to the so-called healthy alternatives at the supermarket.
The problem is that hazelnuts belong to the tree nut category, one of the most common food allergies in Italy.
For people with allergies, even small amounts can trigger serious reactions, which makes finding a safe chocolate spread much more complicated than you might imagine.
The alternatives on the market: why they often disappoint
In recent years, a few hazelnut-free chocolate spreads have appeared, but in most cases they replace one problem with another.
Spreads made with almonds or cashews still contain other tree nuts, which makes them unsuitable for people with nut allergies in general.
Many vegan supermarket spreads, on the other hand, eliminate hazelnuts but compensate with refined oils, artificial sweeteners or large amounts of added sugars.
The result is a product that's technically hazelnut-free, but far from healthy or wholesome.
In practice, anyone looking for a hazelnut-free chocolate spread that's also delicious, made with healthy ingredients and truly safe often ends up having to choose between taste and health…
Our answer: starting from scratch with a completely different recipe
At Vasetto, we rethought the classic spread recipe from the ground up. We started with a simple question: is it possible to create a base that's safe, nourishing and truly tasty all at once?
We found the answer in legumes. We use Italian chickpeas and yellow peas, simple, carefully selected ingredients processed without additives.
The result is a cocoa spread completely free of nuts. It's gluten-free, lactose-free, with no added sugars, 100% vegan and, above all, surprisingly delicious.
With 21 g of protein and 17 g of fiber per 100 g, it offers a nutritional profile that's rare for a chocolate spread.
Few can say the same: no common allergens, no sugar, just essential ingredients and Italian legumes.
